Nassau County has a unique setup. The Nassau County Police Department is one of the largest police forces in the country outside of New York City. They cover the unincorporated areas of the county. Many villages also have their own police. All of these agencies send their arrestees to the county correctional center for booking. The booking report captures the person's name, date of birth, charges, arresting agency, and bail information.

WebCrims data for Nassau County goes back to 1979-1980, making it one of the earliest counties in the state to have its caseload on the system. This means more historical data is available through court searches here than in many other counties.

Requesting Nassau County Booking Reports

Submit a FOIL request to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office or to the Nassau County Police Department, depending on which agency made the arrest. The Freedom of Information Law, Public Officers Law Sections 84 through 90, gives you the right to request records from any New York government agency. Put it in writing. Be as specific as you can about the person's name, date of arrest, and the type of records you need.

Agencies must respond within five business days. Copies cost $0.25 per page. Inspection is free. If denied, you get an explanation and can appeal within 30 days. The Committee on Open Government can help you understand your rights. Some records may be exempt, including sealed cases under CPL 160.50, active investigations, and records that could endanger safety.

Note: Nassau County Police Department records requests go through a different office than Sheriff's Office requests, so make sure you direct your FOIL request to the right agency based on who made the arrest.
