Bronx County Booking Reports

Bronx County booking reports are handled through the New York City Department of Correction, not a county Sheriff's Office. The Bronx is one of five boroughs that make up New York City, and the DOC runs the jail system for all five. When someone is arrested in the Bronx by the NYPD or other law enforcement, they get booked and processed through the city system. You can search for current inmates using the NYC Inmate Lookup at the DOC website. For older booking records, you need to submit a FOIL request to either the NYPD or the Department of Correction. The Bronx court code is BX in the city system, and criminal cases go through Bronx Criminal Court or Bronx Supreme Court.

How Bronx County Booking Reports Work

Arrests in the Bronx go through the NYPD first. Officers process the arrest at the precinct and then the person gets transported to central booking at Bronx Criminal Court. From there, people held on bail or remand go into the NYC Department of Correction system. The DOC runs Rikers Island and other city jail facilities. Bronx County does not have its own separate jail like upstate counties do. Everything goes through the city.

The booking process creates a record that includes the person's name, date of birth, charges, arrest date, and the precinct where they were picked up. The DOC adds housing information, court dates, and bail amounts once the person enters DOC custody. The NYPD keeps its own arrest records separately. So a full picture of a Bronx County booking may require records from both agencies.

For people arrested within the last 72 hours, they may still be in police custody and not yet in the DOC system. Give it a few days before checking the inmate lookup if you do not find someone right away.

Note: The DOC inmate lookup only shows people currently in DOC custody and those released within the past 30 days.

Search Bronx County Inmates Online

The NYC Department of Correction runs an online Inmate Lookup Service where you can search by name, NYSID number, or book and case number. It is free and available around the clock. Results show the person's current location within the DOC system, their charges, scheduled court dates, and expected release date if one has been set. Borough court codes help you identify where the case originated. BX is Bronx, NY is Manhattan, KN is Brooklyn, QN is Queens, and RI is Staten Island.

This tool covers all NYC jail facilities including Rikers Island and borough-based detention centers.

If you cannot find someone in the DOC lookup, they may be in state prison instead. The DOCCS Incarcerated Lookup covers all state correctional facilities. It is a separate system from the city. People sentenced to more than one year typically get transferred to state custody after sentencing.

Bronx County FOIL Requests for Booking Reports

To get copies of arrest and booking records from the Bronx, you file a FOIL request with the NYPD or the NYC Department of Correction. The NYPD accepts FOIL requests by email at FOIL@NYPD.ORG or through the city's online portal at OpenRecords. To request a specific arrest record, you need the complete arrest number, the person's name, date of birth, NYSID, and the date and precinct of the arrest. The more details you give, the faster they can find the record.

The NYPD must acknowledge your request within five business days under New York's Freedom of Information Law. Complex requests may take longer, and the agency will give you a timeline. Copies are $0.25 per page under Public Officers Law. If your request gets denied, you can appeal in writing within 30 days. The Committee on Open Government offers free help with FOIL disputes.

NYPD arrest records go back to 1930. That is a long history. But keep in mind that older records may be harder to find and take longer to retrieve.

Bronx Criminal Court Records

Criminal cases in the Bronx go through two courts. Bronx Criminal Court handles misdemeanors, violations, and the early stages of felony cases. Bronx Supreme Court deals with felony trials and indictments. The NYS OCA Criminal History Record Search can pull case records from both courts. It costs $95 per name and requires exact name and date of birth matching. Results are emailed on business days. Sealed records are not shown.

WebCrims is another tool from the court system that shows pending criminal cases with future court dates. It covers Bronx County along with other jurisdictions. Data for the Bronx goes back to 1986 in WebCrims. The system updates four times a day and shows defendant name, docket number, next court date, and charges. It does not show closed or disposed cases. For that, you need the OCA search or a Certificate of Disposition from the court.

Note: Charge abbreviations in the NYC system use codes like POSS for possession, SUBST for substance, CCW for court warrant, and VTL for traffic violations.

Victim Notification for Bronx County

VINELink covers the Bronx and all other NYC boroughs. You can register for free alerts when an inmate's custody status changes. This includes release, transfer, or escape. Registration is anonymous. The offender does not know you signed up. VINE sends updates by phone, email, or text in ten languages. Call 1-888-VINE-4-NY to register by phone or use the website.

The Sex Offender Registry is also searchable by county. Level 2 and Level 3 offenders in Bronx County appear in the public online directory. For Level 1 offenders, call 800-262-3257 with the person's name and one identifier like date of birth or address.

Booking Reports and the Clean Slate Act

New York's Clean Slate Act went into effect November 16, 2024. The Office of Court Administration has up to three years to build the system that will automatically seal eligible old conviction records. Once that happens, some Bronx County criminal records tied to eligible convictions will no longer appear in searches. Sex crimes and non-drug Class A felonies are excluded from sealing. Until the process is fully set up, all current convictions remain visible in OCA and DCJS searches.

The DCJS Record Review process lets you request your own fingerprint-based criminal history record. You can get either a suppressed version that hides sealed cases or an unsuppressed version that shows everything. Contact DCJS at 518-457-9847 or email RecordReview@dcjs.ny.gov for details.
