Kings County Booking Reports Lookup

Kings County booking reports cover all arrests in Brooklyn, the most populated borough in New York City. Unlike most New York counties, Kings County does not have its own county jail or Sheriff's Office handling bookings. The NYC Department of Correction runs the jail system for all five boroughs. The NYPD handles arrests. So if you need a booking report from Brooklyn, you will work with city agencies rather than a county Sheriff. The Incarcerated Person Lookup Service from the NYC DOC is the best place to start your search for someone booked in Kings County.

Kings County Booking Reports Through NYC DOC

The NYC Department of Correction manages the jail system for all of New York City, including Kings County. People arrested in Brooklyn get booked at a local precinct by the NYPD first. After processing, they go into DOC custody if they cannot make bail or if the charges require holding. The DOC runs facilities on Rikers Island and at borough-based jails.

The Incarcerated Person Lookup Service is online at a073-ils-web.nyc.gov. You can search by first and last name, NYSID number, or book and case number. The system shows the person's current location, charges, and scheduled release date. The court code for Kings County is KN. This lookup only covers people in DOC custody. It does not show people still in police custody or those already transferred to state prison.

There is a 72-hour window after arrest where someone may not yet appear in the DOC system. If the arrest happened within the last three days, the person may still be at the precinct. Call the NYC DOC Information Center at (718) 546-1500 for help finding someone.

NYPD Booking Reports and FOIL Requests

For arrest records from Brooklyn, submit a FOIL request to the NYPD. Email FOIL@NYPD.ORG or use the online portal at a869-openrecords.nyc.gov. The NYPD has records going back to 1930. To find a specific arrest record, you will need the complete arrest number, the person's name, date of birth, NYSID, and the date and precinct of arrest. The more details you provide, the better.

The agency has five business days to acknowledge your request. Actual delivery may take longer for complex requests. Copies cost $0.25 per page under Public Officers Law Section 87. Some records are exempt from disclosure. Active investigations, sealed cases, and records that would endanger someone's safety can be withheld. If denied, you can appeal in writing within 30 days to the Records Access Appeals Officer.

Note: Body-worn camera footage from NYPD officers requires a separate request through the Legal Bureau's Document Production Unit, not the standard FOIL process.

Kings County Court Records and Booking Data

Kings County criminal cases go through the Kings County Supreme Court and Kings County Criminal Court. The court system is part of the 2nd Judicial Department. Court records are separate from booking reports and are managed by the Unified Court System rather than the NYPD or DOC.

WebCrims shows pending criminal cases with future court dates. You can search by defendant name or case number. It is free. For Kings County, data goes back to 1986 when Brooklyn courts added their active caseload to the system. Cases are updated four times daily. The detail screen shows year of birth, arrest date and time, arresting agency, and charge details including law code, section, and disposition.

The OCA Criminal History Record Search costs $95 and covers all courts statewide. Sealed records do not appear. For a certified document, you need a Certificate of Disposition from the court where the case was heard.

What Kings County Booking Reports Contain

Booking reports from Kings County follow the same format as all NYC boroughs. The report records the person's full name, date of birth, address, and physical description. It lists each charge with the applicable penal law section. The arresting officer, precinct, date and time of arrest, and the NYSID number are all included. The DOC assigns a book and case number once the person enters their custody. Bail or remand status is recorded after the arraignment.

Brooklyn has dozens of NYPD precincts. Each one handles the initial arrest and paperwork. The DOC takes custody after that. Charge abbreviations on the booking record use standard codes like POSS for possession and SUBST for substance. VTL codes cover traffic-related charges. Understanding these codes helps you read the report faster.
